Homework Assignments & Course Schedule

Here is a link back to the course syllabus/policy page, which has a detailed explanation of homework types, policies, and procedures.

In the following all sections and page numbers refer to the required course textbook, Precalculus, Fifth Edition, by James Stewart, Lothar Redlin and Saleem Watson.

This schedule is subject to change, but should be accurate at any moment for at least a week into the future.

For each day, please read the section(s) named in the plan, before that day, while the homework is due that day, either in class or handed in at my office by 3pm.

• The plan for this week:
  • M: Mostly bureaucracy and introductions. Read "To the Student" and skim Chapter 1 (its contents should be review!).
  • T: Finish skimming Chapter 1 — you might look through the chapter review materials and exercises on pp. 130-137 and the general problem-solving suggestions on pp. 138-145 — and read §2.1; HW0: Send me e-mail: Please send me (at jonathan.poritz@gmail.com) a message telling me:
    1. Your name.
    2. Your e-mail address.
    3. Your year/program/major at CSUP.
    4. The reason you are taking this course.
    5. What you intend to do after CSUP, in so far as you have an idea.
    6. Past math classes you've had.
    7. Other math and science classes you are taking this term, and others you intend to take in coming terms.
    8. Your favorite mathematical subject.
    9. Your favorite mathematical result/theorem/technique/example/problem.
    10. Anything else you think I should know (disabilities, employment or other things that take a lot of time, how you feel about mathematics, etc.)
    11. [Optional:] The best book you have read recently.
    I will not count your homework grades until I have this e-mail from you.

  • W: Read §2.2; hand in HW1 §2.1: 4[8], 12[14], 20[24], 32[30], 44[48], 52[58]
  • Θ: Read §2.3; hand in HW2 §2.2: 12[18], 20[26], 38[40], 44[48], 50[54], 56[60].
  • F: Quiz 1 today. Read §2.4; hand in HW3 §2.3: 4[10], 14[18], 26[30] and MI1.
• NOTE: Friday is the last day to add classes without explicit instructor approval.

• The plan for this week:
  • M: Read §6.5; hand in HW39 §6.4: 2[4], 8[10], 22[24], 28[38], 32[34].
  • T: Read §6.5; hand in HW40 §6.5: 2[4], 6[8], 10[12], 14[16].
  • W: Chapters 5 and 6 review — here is a summary (and work)sheet ... note this summary sheet is for all the trig work we will do for the entire semester, so for the current test, you need only pay attention to the parts up to and including VII B; hand in HW41 §6.5: 20[22], 24[26], 32[34], 44[46].
  • Θ: Brief [=10-15min], concluding chapter 5 and 6 review, followed by
        Part I of Test III (on Chapters 5&6).
    No homework due today.
  • F: The entire class will be
        Part II of Test III (on Chapters 5&6).
    Hand in MI10.

• Here is a summary sheet (and worksheet) for the trigonometry we've done.
• The plan for this week:
  • M: Read §10.1; please hand in any outstanding homework, including HW49, if you did not hand it in.
  • T: Read §10.2; hand in HW50 §10.1: 8[10], 16[18], 26[28], 38[40].
  • W: Read §10.3; hand in HW51 §10.2: 2[4], 6[10], 20[22], 30[34].
  • Θ: Read §10.4; hand in HW52 §10.3: 2[4], 6[10], 20[22], 30[32].
  • F: Quiz 10 today. Review of chapters 7 and 10. Hand in HW53 §10.4: 2[4], 6[8], 10[12], 14[16], 22[30].
