Test III Review Sheet for
Colorado State University, Pueblo
Math 109 — Number Theory —
Spring 2014
Definitions
Terms you should know -- be able to state clearly what they mean, recognize
them in examples, and create your own examples of them
- sample space: outcomes and events
- counting, sizes of sample spaces: the multiplication rule
- permutations v.s. combinations
- probabilty assignment, rules
- equiprobable space
- complementary events
- independent events
- odds
- shape of the normal curve: symmetry, location of the inflection points
- reading off $\mu$ and $\sigma$ from the curve
- the 68-95-99.7 rule
- quartiles located at $\mu\pm.675\sigma$
- "standardizing" a normal RV
- the honest coin principle — $\mu=n/2$, $\sigma=\sqrt{n}/2$.
- the dishonest coin principle — $\mu=np$,
$\sigma=\sqrt{np(1-p)}$.
- simple interest, APR
- principal
- future value of money (investment)
- compounded interest: $n$ times per year or continuously
- annual percentage yield (APY)
- geometric series, their sums
- fixed deferred annuities, formula for future value —
not for this test: skip this particular material for
the moment!
- installment loans, amortization formula
Things to know how to do
- Basically, do (and explain!) any of the assigned homwork from Chapters 10,
15, & 16.
- Explain, use, and compute all of the terms mentioned above
Format of the test
There will be several problems from all three chapters, of a level of
difficulty and wording similar to the problems which you have done for
homework. The total points for the chapter will be more than 100, you can
choose which 100 points you want to do out of the available problems.
